Whether answering letters for Ancestors, planning the next trip or researching articles and books, Simon is always looking things up. “I inherited this from my father,” he says. “he was always keen on checking facts. He’d take me and my brother to the local library on Friday evenings, where I’d be happy looking through encyclopedias and especially atlases.”

Now he’s developed it to high art.
