A common complaint that websites are inaccurate, but so are books. Here are five which I use daily. There are no surprises
Google – one day it will take over the world, but in the meantime just type the subject or the person into the search engine and hey presto! Don’t forget to put double quotes around a phrase to limit the search. http://www.google.co.uk/
The British Library subject catalogue – bibliographical details of almost every book published in the English language. www.bl.uk
For material in archives across the United Kingdom try the global search engine on The National Archives website. It’s actually cunningly hidden on TNA’s homepage – enter what you are looking for into the search box at the top right. www.nationalarchives.gov.uk
The travel site I use most is The Man in Seat 61, which has links to railways around the world.
A selection of useful sites I come across in the course of my work appear in my blog at www.ancestorsmagazine.co.uk.
